Could I gently remind you to pay for the season if you haven’t already?
Puzzle of the week: mate in one move — reckoned to be one of the hardest!
Hints (click-drag-select to view):
I’m a bit bored of writing this, but the result doesn’t reflect the closeness of the contests! Great result by Reece, saving us from the whitewash, but some great moves and terrific heart shown by all.
A tale of three discoveries: a discovered attack proved the winning move in all three games.
Unmasked threats – discovered attacks and discovered checks – are the
most difficult threats to spot. You pay attention to the piece that
moves, but the threat comes from the piece behind.
I’ve attached a discovered attack training page – get your eye in! In 2010, the Devon U14 team lost an awful lot of points (or a lot of awful points) to discovered attacks, and the puzzles are all things that they missed.
{Some over-cautious play by Black gave White some chances early on, but it
fizzled out. White decided to save a pawn … but lost a Knight instead!
White then attacked very well and won the Exchange, leaving the balance Rook
against two minor pieces – about equal. But then Black sprang a deadly
discovery to win.}
{White’s home-made system against the Dragon got into a bit of a muddle, and
once it started going wrong, White jumped from the frying pan to the fire to
the furnace…}
{In a line Black was unsure about, White got an advantage in space and
development, which was used to put pressure on the Queen’s-side. After a big
chance was missed by White, the game fizzled out into a standard French
better-for-Black endgame, and Black took the chances that came by.}

Observation from this week’s club: After your opponent makes a move, don’t just press on with your plan without spending a while looking at it to see what they are trying to do. Maybe they are threatening you? Maybe they have blundered and put a piece in a position where you can capture it – this happened twice whilst I was watching, once a Queen and once a Rook!!
8 November
A couple of experienced members played some speed chess games using a chess clock this week. Speed chess is fun, but it does not improve your chess skill. You need thinking time to look for the best move in any given position.
1 November
Sadly, 14 players have not returned to the club after the two and a half year Covid break. I have archived them on my database system, but it would be very easy to re-activate them! Hopefully, some will return before Christmas . . .

Pengxiao Successes: –
20 September 2022
Exeter Junior Chess Club is up and running again, after the Covid break – hooray! Tell your friends that we are back . . .It’s been great to see previous members Tim, Shreyas, Tejas and Pengxiao again, and also to meet some new members. Hopefully the number of players each week will grow, as old members and new players hear about us.
The major change to the club is that we have moved to Tuesdays, and we now have to charge a small fee – see Membership for details.
Another change is that player grades have gone and been replaced by ratings. These internal ratings run in the same way as the ECF rating system. Limited highlights will be published here after they settle down.
Our First Match
Well, ouch! We lost four-nil, but I hope you thought that, however
big and strong they were, they weren’t that much better than us, and
they didn’t do anything very special to beat us. (Is that a good
thing?) But I was very pleased and proud with how well you
played, how well you fought, and how well you concentrated. It
wouldn’t have needed much luck for us to come away with 2-2.
They’re just tall, that’s all…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di1-bB1w4wM
In the end, we fell
for a few simple tactics and there were a couple of chances that we
missed, and that all comes with time and practice.
The best books to start to practice spotting tactics are the blue one I
wrote with Tim (Chess Puzzles in One
Move) and a yellow book by Tony Gillam, Simple Chess Tactics. If you think
those are too easy, try the website http://chess.emrald.net/
These will help, but the main thing is to think for both sides. There’s
no point in spotting all the ideas for your side, but ignoring what
your opponent can do to you. Check each check and each
capture on every move.
Also, we do need some better openings to put pressure on our
opponents. I have written a little guide that I think I’ve given to all
the team players, but everyone can have a copy
PDF
if they like. The idea is
to play the Scotch Gambit against 1…e5 and to go for IQP positions
against everything else.

position in which it is impossible to lose.[/em]”

Dr Dave dug out one of his favourite puzzles, which is actually two puzzles in one (White to play and checkmate Black quickly).
But Dave, which way are the Black pawns going?
It doesn’t matter! It’s mate in three either way.
SOLUTIONS (select below to reveal)
a. bottom left = a1 : 1.Bc6 bxc6 2.Kc8 c5 3.Nc7#
b. bottom left = h8:
1. Kc6 b8=Q 2.Nc7+ Qxc7+ 3. Kxc7#
or 1…b8=N+ 2.Kc7+ Nc6 3.Bxc6#
{A terrific scrap where both sides took and missed their chances. In the end
the struggle with the 32 pieces on the board was decided as much by the clock
as by the moves.}
{White played an unknown system and got a bit lost. Trying to save a pawn,
White lost one piece and should have lost another. The position settled down
with Black dominant, and White never really had a chance.}
See also: http://exeterchessclub.org.uk/content/making-it-you-go-along
{Black wins a pawn but misses a discovery to lose a piece. Black keeps going
and eventually finds a perpetual check.}
{White started very well but the position became blocked and difficult.
Trying to get something going, you played a poor move, and things then went
from bad to worse.}
