Welcome to Newcomers
Hello and welcome to the club!
We hope you enjoyed your time with us and we look forward to seeing you again.
Just some notes that we might not have had time to explain to you yet:
- We play all the rules of chess, including touch-move, touch-take, and castling king-first. But we also like to be generous to new members who might not be used to these rules at home. Oh, and en passant, which has its own page
- We usually write down all the results of games, and these go towards our in-house rating list, which is updated each week.
- There’s no need to wait for an adult to pair you with another player — just ask if they would like a game
- If there’s nobody to play, you can wait, you can watch another game (but you mustn’t talk about it!), or you can ask for a puzzle
- We don’t do lessons at the club but you can always ask a question and we have books to borrow and puzzles to try. The DJCA (Devon Junior Chess Association) have lessons on their website and a YouTube channel.
You are welcome to come for two or three weeks to try us out, before deciding if you want to join.
Parents/carers:
You are welcome to stay for the session.
You can leave your young player with us on a club night but we must have your ‘phone number to hand if you want to do this.
Please bring younger players into the playing room and come into the room to collect them — that way there is not a moment when they are out of sight of an adult.
If and when you would like to pay for membership for this season Sept-May, you can do so through a link on the DJCA website (thanks, Steve!)
