Club Details
We meet in the David Jeffreys Room, Heavitree Social Club, 2 East Wonford Hill, EX1 3BS, most Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30, September to May. Exact dates can be seen on the Noticeboard on the right-hand side of the home page.
We had 24 full members in the 2023/4 season and the weekly attendance towards the end averaged at about 13.
For newcomers, here is a Location Map. The Social Club is the large building on the south side of the main road in the location pointed at by the arrow shown. There is a large, free car park up the steep slope to the right of the building. If you are walking, then take great care in crossing the main road - it is tricky.
If you are interested in joining, you can turn up any week for a free taster session or two. Then, there is an annual £15 fee for full membership, to cover the cost of the room hire from September to May, i.e., 30 or so sessions. Payment can be made online by following this link EJCC Membership Fee - please make sure to include 'EJCC + player's name' as the reference. If you want to play, but can only come occasionally, then you could pay £2 per session, though we would prefer to avoid collecting money each week.
As well as a player's name and school year, we require an adult email address (for direct communication) and telephone number (in case of an emergency).
Players of suitable maturity can be left in the chess room without family supervision, though adults can stay in the room, if they wish. Some parents join in and play!
The club exists to enable enthusiastic youngsters to play each other. There is no lower age limit for members, but it is expected that all players know the moves and basic rules of the game and can play others independently. We are not expecting to teach children new to chess how to play - this is best learned from family members or school friends. Suitable resources can be recommended, if requested.
There are no formal teaching sessions for improvers, though coaching is frequently offered as the opportunity arises. Lots of club members have become strong county players and there is an easy transition to the adult Exeter Chess Club for older players.
Please stay away if you are not well - Covid, flu, a cold or any other infectious illness!
